We were fortunate to have friends who do horseback multi-day tours into the Lamar Valley take us on a day drive through this beautiful location in Yellowstone. This valley is not included in most tours of the park, and that is a shame because of its beauty and wildlife. Often called the “American Serengeti,” it is flanked by the Absaroka Range to the north and the Yellowstone Plateau to the south. Here you can see nearly every animal that calls Yellowstone home. This valley offers a unique blend of breathtaking scenery and rich biodiversity—grasslands, rivers, and mountains. Its elevation ranges from about 6,500 ft. to over 8,000 ft.
We entered at Roosevelt Arch and drove the Grand Loop Road east to the valley. Here we passed Undine Falls, beautiful landscapes of the Blacktail Plateau, and saw our first black bear. Following the Blacktail Plateau Drive through beautiful landscape we got to the Tower Roosevelt intersection and continued on the Lamar River Road into the valley.

Clearly my photos don’t do this valley justice, but the wildlife and vistas were magnificent. Thanks to Mike and Erin for the trip.
