Cape Point

A trip to Cape Town requires a trip down the Cape Peninsula to Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point.  We headed out of town along the water, seeing the World Cup Stadium and beautiful beaches and communities along the way. Looking across the water you can see the Twelve-Apostle Mountains which stretch along the beach between Camps Bay and Haut Bay. Interestingly, there are 18 mountains in the range starting with Table Mountain.

Our first stop was Hout Bay. This is a picturesque fishing village on the peninsula with a beautiful white sand beach. Here you could take a seal watching tour to Duiker Island; however we opted to see the seals from the shore.

We stopped for lunch at Cape Point Ostrich Farm, next to the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve.  Later, we had to have Ostrich burgers at Two Oceans Restaurant at the Cape. Looking out at the ocean, we saw some whales. The two oceans that meet at Cape Point are the Atlantic and Indian Ocean however, the boundary between the warm waters of the Indian Ocean and the cold Atlantic migrates seasonally between Cape Agulhas and Cape Point.

Then it was on the Cape of Good Hope, the most southwest point of the continent. It lies at the tip of the Cape Peninsula.

Two miles later we arrived at Cape Point, a nature preserve with steep cliffs plunging into the ocean.  It was here that we met up with Baboons that were very aggressive.  We were warned that they would take food out of your hand.  From the lighthouse, you can see all around.

Our next stop on the way back to Cape Town we stopped at Boulders Beach in Simon’s Town which is home to a colony of African penguins. I didn’t know there were penguins outside of Antarctica.  They were so interesting to watch.  This is on the Indian Ocean side of the Peninsula. Then back to Cape Town. We passed through Kalk Bay and Muizenberg, located on the False Bay coast. Muizenberg is famous for its colorful Victorian bathing huts.
