Giza

We headed early to Giza to see the Great Pyramid of Cheops; the Second Pyramid of Kephrine, The Queen’s Pyramids “Hnout-Sin”, the third Pyramid of Mekrenas, the Solar Boat Museum, The Great Sphinx, and the Valley Temple—all about 4,500 years old.  This morning exceeded my expectations. Having read about this area for so many years, I was thrilled to be there in person.   It was interesting to compare these pyramids to the Inca stonework.

Having explored these pyramids at length, we moved on to the Solar Boat Museum. The Solar Boat Museum houses the ancient solar boat of the Pharoah Khufu discovered in 1954.  It is the biggest boat built to carry the pharaoh to the underworld.  The museum was built between 1951 and 1982. We saw the trench where the boat was discovered as well as pieces and replicas in the museum. The original pit is 30 m long and was covered with 41 large blocks of limestone weighing about 18 tons. 1224 wooden pieces of the dismantled boat were found inside the pit.

The Sphinx

Our next stop was the Sphinx. By now it was very crowded but we walked up to and through the monument and then had lunch at a restaurant overlooking it.

After lunch we explored Coptic Cairo. See next post.
