Smiljan and Zadar

The highway from Plitvice Lakes runs along the mountains, diving Croatia.  In early times the mountains kept the Ottomans on the east side of the mountains and the Venetians on the West.

Our next stop was  Nikola Tesla’s home in Smiljan.  There we saw the church where his father was an orthodox priest, the home he was raised in, and his lab.  Behind the church was the village graveyard.  We learned of the many patents Tesla had, saw prototypes of his induction turbine,  induction motor, rotating magnetic field, Tesla Coil, etc.  There is also a statue of Tesla by sculptor Mile Blažević.

From Tesla’s Center we travelled to Zadar on the Sea where we had lunch at a restaurant run by a Canadian/ Croatian couple that that just moved back and bought the restaurant a year and a half ago. The meal was great as was listening to their story.

After lunch, we headed south to meet our boat. We were supposed to meet in Trogir; however, the high seas prevented our boar, the Vapor, from landing there, so we drove farther south to Makarska to meet it.
