Sipan

Once part of the Republic of Ragusa, Sipan is the biggest island of Elaaphiti group and has two small settlements. Wealthy Ragusa families built their summer palaces and villas on this island.

Its history dates at least from the 1370s when the island’s name was first mentioned in historical documents. In the earlier documents, the island was named as Jupana, Zupana or Supana.

The proof that the island was inhabited in Roman times is the remains of a Roman villa Rustica near Šipanska Luka bay. Numerous remains of churches from medieval times are spread around the island. Its history dates at least from the 1370s when the island’s name was first mentioned in historical documents. In the earlier documents, the island was named as Jupana, Zupana or Supana.

The two small towns are Sudurad where we docked and Sipanska Luka about 5 km away. The land is full of olive and fig trees and grapes. It is a blossoming wine center. Our main visit was to a small family-run winery. We had a lecture from the vintner and a tasting of several of his wines.

Before he became a vintner, our host was a sea captain. Green comes from the ecological process he uses. Hence the name.

From here we sailed on to Dubrovnik through the Elaphiti islands.

Tomorrow we will be in Dubrovnik.
