When Bob found a cruise that went from Rio De Janeiro to Barcelona, it looked perfect: Two cities on our list to see and a cruise linking them. While getting to Rio from Seattle was difficult and long, the trip let us cover a lot of territory that was new to us. We got to take in the end of Carnival in Rio and see two other ports in Brazil, visit Cape Verde, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Morocco, and finally see Barcelona where we disembarked. The next posts will detail that trip.

Getting to Rio from Seattle meant going through Miami. Fortunately our son has a condo in Miami where we could overnight. Our trip to Miami was uneventful. We were able to check our luggage to Rio, so didn’t have to deal with it in Miami. We arrived at Tim’s condo and settled in. We went down to the restaurant and had a wonderful dinner—duck a la orange; asparagus with caviar, and dessert.
When we returned to the condo, we tried to double check our flight to Rio. It was cancelled and they hadn’t told us. They had rebooked us on separate flights, again not telling us. I told them that was not acceptable. After more than an hour, we were booked through Lima. So, it was nice to have Tim’s condo to stay in since our flight didn’t leave until 5 pm.
We arrived at airport two hours early, got boarding passes, and checked on where our luggage was. The agent found it and rebooked it. Our flight to Lima was crowded—no extra legroom seats. But Lima to Rio we did get extra legroom. That was an overnight flight and neither of us slept much.
We finally arrived in Rio and had to wait for an hour for our luggage. Then there was a long line to exit the airport. We got a taxi to the hotel. Thankfully, the room was waiting for us. We had breakfast and napped until noon, when our Rio adventure began.
